When I was little, I used to beg my mom to hold her hand down, at her side, until the veins on the back of her hand were full of blood, and I would squish the plump, juicy veins with my fingers, trying to smush the blood in one direction or the other, flattening the vein behind it as I went. Then I’d scream for her to lift her hands up, in front of her face, so the blood would move back down, and she would have smooth-backed young lady-mom hands again, instead of old witch-hands with their topography of blood.
I am older now than she was then, and I raise and lower my own hands and say to myself
young…
old…
young…
old…
When I see her now, I catch myself holding her hand, pushing a vein back and forth absently with my thumb while we talk.
Have I mentioned how much I love Barbara Boxer?

No, you can’t deny women their basic rights and pretend it’s about your “religious freedom.” If you don’t like birth control, don’t use it. Religious freedom doesn’t mean you can force others to live by your own beliefs. - Barack Obama
same goes for abortion.
